SAN DIEGO COUNTY

I-5 Widening (North County)
This project will add HOV lanes to the San Diego Freeway (I-5) between Del Mar Heights Road and Vandergrift Blvd. Four mixed-flow lanes will also be added to the freeway between Del Mar Heights Road and Encinitas Blvd., and two mixed-flow lanes will be added between Encinitas Blvd. and Vandergrift Blvd. These lanes are being built to meet future demands for freeway capacity in this corridor.

I-5/I-805 "Dual Freeway"
To eliminate crossing patterns for drivers going between the 5/805 merge and the CA-56 freeway, a "dual freeway" will be built. This involves adding lanes between the merge and the 56 freeway that will be separated from the lanes on the existing San Diego freeway. The new, separated lanes will have direct connections to the 56 freeway. Also, the existing San Diego Freeway will be widened to improve traffic flow in this bottleneck.
Detailed Construction Information

I-5/CA-78 Connector Improvement
The existing north-east connector at the 5/78 interchange has only one lane, and it is a bottleneck during peak periods. Long backlogs of slow-moving cars form on the northbound San Diego Freeway because of this bottleneck, resulting in a dangerous situation. To improve safety near the interchange, the connector road will be widened to two lanes. An extra lane will also be added on the eastbound 78 freeway between the connector road and the Jefferson Road off-ramp, to make the transition smoother for commuters.

I-15 Express Lanes Extension
I-15 HOV Lanes
I-15 Managed Lanes
The existing managed HOV lanes will be extended northward from Ted Williams Parkway (near the CA-56 freeway) to the CA-78 freeway in Escondido. There will be three lanes, with a median barrier that can be adjusted to provide an additional lane in the direction of peak flow.

CA-52 Freeway Extension
This project would complete the CA-52 freeway in Santee, between the CA-125 and CA-67 freeways. When finished, this freeway will reduce congestion on I-8 and local surface streets by providing a parallel alternate to those routes.

CA-56 Freeway
Two pieces of this freeway already exist, near the I-5 and I-15 freeways. This project will provide a new freeway segment between Carmel Valley and Rancho Pensaquitos, to complete the 56 freeway. The new freeway will reduce traffic on the existing mountain roads, as well as provide access to new housing developments.

CA-76 Realignment Study
Alternate routes are being studied for the realignment of CA-76 (Mission Ave.) between Melrose Drive in Oceanside and the community of Bonsall. When realigned, the road will also be widened to four lanes, improving traffic flow and safety.

Campo Road (CA-94) Safety Improvements
Campo Road (CA-94), a surface highway, provides the only link between San Diego and the Mexican city of Tecate. To improve safety on this road, shoulders and a center turn lane will be added in the vicinity of Rancho San Diego.

CA-94/CA-125 Interchange Improvements
Ultimate Project
Interim Project
This project will add connector lanes to the 94/125 interchange and widen the 125 freeway near the interchange, to provide transition lanes for traffic. The purpose of this project is to provide the needed connections between the 94 freeway and the new 125 freeway. Interim ramps will be built before the permanent ones.

CA-125 Freeway North
This project will complete the CA-125 freeway between I-8 and CA-52. The only unfinished segment is between Navajo Road and Grossmont College Drive. This will complete the "North Inner Loop" of San Diego's freeway system, reducing traffic congestion on other parts of the freeway system as well as local surface streets.

CA-125 Freeway Central
This segment of the CA-125 freeway is another significant piece of San Diego's expanding freeway network. This part of the freeway is between the CA-54 and CA-94 freeways. When opened, it will provide a parallel alternate to I-5 and I-805, resulting in significant traffic congestion relief on those routes.

CA-125 Freeway South
This part of the CA-125 freeway, between route 905 and the CA-54 freeway, will be built as a tollway. This project will provide direct north/south freeway access to the Otay Mesa border crossing and reduce traffic congestion on the I-5 and I-805 freeways.

CA-905 Freeway
To provide better access to the Otay Mesa border crossing, the existing Otay Mesa Road will be supplemented with a new six-lane freeway. This project is currently in the environmental/engineering study phase.
